About
Dr. Cherubino Di Lorenzo is a neurologist who focuses on headache disorders, including migraine, cluster headache, medication overuse headache, trigeminal neuralgia, and rarer forms. He also cares for people with other neurological conditions, especially those of later life, and sees patients in Rome, in Salerno, and online.
He earned his medical degree at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and specialized in neurology at Sapienza University of Rome. He went on to complete a master's degree in Headache Medicine at Sapienza and a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Pavia. He has been a research fellow at Sapienza University of Rome since 2010 and holds Italy's national qualification for associate professor of neurology.
Dr. Di Lorenzo has published more than 270 papers in international journals. He co-authored the 2025 evidence-based guidelines for the pharmacological treatment of migraine, developed by the Italian Society for the Study of Headache together with the International Headache Society, and the 2026 Italian consensus on migraine care pathways from primary care to specialist care. His research spans the neurophysiology and genetics of migraine, medication overuse headache, nutraceuticals, and nutritional approaches to headache, including ketogenic diets, where he has led clinical studies and contributed to international recommendations. He also researches the gut-brain axis, the link between gut disorders and neurological disease.
His approach starts with listening. He rebuilds the full history of a patient's headaches, explains clearly what is happening and why, and chooses the path forward together with the patient. He advises national and international headache patient associations, has been a member of the Italian Society for the Study of Headaches (SISC) since 2005, served as coordinator of its Lazio-Molise section, and founded the Italian Facebook support groups โHo mal di testaโ and โChetogenesiโ.
